What is your secret ingredient?

KFC, Coca-Cola, and a dozen other food brands have a ‘secret ingredient’ – the mystery spice or flavor that sets them apart from the competition and keeps the customers begging for more. So what’s yours? Do you know it's there?

We’re not asking for you to divulge your precious IP, but rather to stand back and reflect…what is going into your product that customers don’t know about? It could be so secret that even you don’t know it’s in there! So where is it coming from, and how is it getting in there?

Food manufacturing is a work of art. Hundreds of products come together in the one plant and go through a variety of processes to make some of the finest foods on the supermarket shelves – cakes, buns, doughnuts, bread rolls, soups, chocolate, sweets, chips, salads, cereals, cheeses, baby food…you name it. But often one tiny extra ingredient, that wasn’t issued a purchase order, manages to slip into the process line. We’re talking metal fragments. Small, but dangerous. They can come from anywhere and can cause massive problems.

The unwanted foreign bodies can slip in with your supplier’s products, can result from wear off a machine, or can enter the process with raw ingredients from the field.

Maybe you are the supplier, and your customer is finding stray pieces of metal contamination in your product! Did you know they were there? Where did they come from?

It could be that your secret ingredient sets you apart from the pack – but not in a good way!

It might be time to take a really hard look at your processes to see where your risks are. Here are some questions to ask:

  • How could stray pieces of metal enter your food products?
  • Where are they coming from?
  • Are YOU the source of another company’s contamination?
  • Are you on the receiving end of contaminated product?
  • How can you ensure you are safe?
  • What methods do you have in place to ensure ingredients coming in and going out of your facility are clean from metal contamination?
  • In the event of a food recall and investigation, how confident would you be that the foreign material didn’t come from your plant?
  • Are you in control of your risks?
