Benefits of Acutex™ Probe Magnets

RE80® Acutex™ Probe Magnets are a step above the rest when it comes to increased separation efficiency and product-to-magnet contact. Compared to standard probe magnets, the RE80® Acutex™ Probe Magnet is specifically designed to improve laminar flow of products. This is achieved by reducing the impact of the product on the surface of regular, circular magnet bars/probes, transverse to the product flow. So what defines a 'regular probe magnet'?


The term 'Probe Magnet' covers a variety of different magnet designs, shapes, and sizes. Essentially, a Probe Magnet consists of an open-ended magnet bar or tube that is positioned into the flow of product. As the product flows past, metal contaminants are attracted and retained to the Probe. Probe Magnets can be used by themselves, as a sampling/testing tool, or be incorporated in magnet housings, such as a Liquid Pressure Pipeline Separator or a Round Pipe Separator.

Probe Magnets range in length depending on the size of the housing, chute/duct or the pipeline they are fitted into. Most are a cylindrical shape and vary between 25mm - 51mm (1" - 2") in diameter. The Acutex™ Probe Magnets, however, are a little different...


The patented, sanitary, RE80® Acutex™ Probe Magnet was first designed and manufactured by Magnattack Global in 2014. Shortly after, in 2015, it was included in the new Powder Transfer Magnet when it received USDA Dairy Acceptance along with other sanitary Magnattack RE80® systems.

This probe has a distinctive lachrymiform (tear-drop) shape, with a large highly magnetic surface area on the underside, tapering to a point on the upper. The pointed end is positioned to face the oncoming flow of the product. When metal fragments are collected by the probe, they are 'washed' around to the back of the probe, which is out of the way of oncoming product. Because the fragments are retained outside of the force of the product flow, re-contamination risks are minimized. This, along with RE80® Technology, is what sets the Acutex™ Probe above standard Probe Magnets. This unique shape has a great number of advantages in magnetic separation, which are set out below.


The distinctive and aerodynamic shape of the RE80® Acutex™ Probe greatly reduces the risk of product bridging/build-up and consequential product stream blockage. Product bridging and build-up increase the likelihood of collected metal re-contaminating the product stream, so it is critical that this risk is minimized where possible.
The shape of the magnet allows the product to flow smoothly around the magnet with minimal impact on the product characteristics. Due to the special contour of the probe, an extremely aerodynamic transition of product flow and magnetic fragment retention area is achieved in dry applications where the product is conveyed pneumatically - with minimal to no bulk density effect. In the case of liquid or viscous applications, the design provides a very hydrodynamic passage of product flow, therefore reducing the risk of product build-up and loss of collected magnetics.
When installed correctly, with the point of the Acutex™ Probe Magnet directed towards oncoming product flow, captured magnetics are moved to the back of the probe where they are retained on the magnet away from the flow - this is key to reducing the risk of re-contamination.
The pointed edge of the probe separates the flow and maximum product-to-magnet is achieved, whilst maintaining laminar flow. The longer the dwell time of product in contact with the magnet, the less chance a metal fragment has of escaping and continuing through the process with the product.
The RE80® Acutex™ Probe includes high-intensity +11,000 Gauss RE80® Magnet Technology, which assures of long-term magnet strength life, and resistance to oxygen absorption and resonant vibration (which are key causes of demagnetization in conventional rare earth magnets).
As with all Magnattack systems, the Acutex™ Probe Magnet is certified by HACCP International and conforms with HACCP International Food Safety Standard 0909MAGSEP 1-2010.
